I had a first generation one of these and it was very useful. I am a rn but never used it in work just on my kids when they had suspected ear infections. I did a trip to Malawi and was screening a bunch of kids and it came in very handy so I left it with one of the local nurses. When I got back I wanted to replace it and found that I was four generations behind.

Like I said the basic one is fine but this one is much better. Firstly it is heavier which may not sound like an advantage but it makes it easier to handle for small adjustments. The handle is wider for better grip and the lense is much larger for easier visualization. They build quality seems very high and it performs as well as any otoscope I have used, the LED is bright and even my 7 year old was able to visualize my ear drum quickly with it.

The only change I would make would be to dim the LED to check pupil reflex, it's a bit bright for that. However it was not designed for that so I can't say that it let me down.

If you want to just occasionally check your kids ears for infection then the original one will be fine, but if you spend the extra and get this you will have an easier time, particularly if you are not used to using an otoscope. This one however will work well for home use but is also cheap and tough and effective so if you take it out into the field or practice you can use it without having to worry about it but also not care if you leave it or give it to someone.

I feel the same about stethoscopes, they have to do the job well, for as long as posssible but you shouldn't panic if you find out you have lost it because it cost so much.

All in all a great tool.

Since my 2 1/2 year old daughter keeps getting ear infections this cold season and I'm tired of paying co-pays for Dr. visits to check her ears when she's sick, I decided to try this out so I can check her ears for infection myself. I am very pleased with it! The otoscope comes in a thick black cardboard, foam-lined box to hold its contents secure and comes with some disposable specula tips and a photo guide of what normal, infected, perforated, and ears with tubes look like, which is very helpful for someone with no medical training. The otoscope is about 6 1/2" long and is made of very sturdy aluminum material and I like the textured center which provides a better grip on it while doing an ear exam. The on/off button is on the bottom of it and I like the large 1" diameter lens so you can get a large field of view of the ear.

Another great feature is that you can use both large and small diameter disposable specula tips so that you can use it for children and adults. The white light is bright and lights up the inner ear well. I like that it uses disposable specula tips so that you don't have to worry about disinfecting or cleaning them. When you put on a new tip, you will need to twist clockwise until it locks in. It doesn't lock in as securely as I'd like and is still kind of wobbly, but it will stay on long enough to do the ear exam.

One suggestion I have for the manufacturer is that they should include some helpful tips on doing a proper ear exam along with the provided photo guide. The first few times I used it, I thought I was looking at the ear drum but apparently I wasn't angling it properly so all I saw was ear wax.

I learned the following helpful tips from my pediatrician on using the otoscope:
*When doing an exam, hold the otoscope in the hand of the ear you are examining (ex: left ear, use left hand to hold otoscope) and hold it like a pencil between your index finger and thumb, resting the pinky finger on the person's cheek to steady your hand and if the person moves their head, the otoscope moves with it and won't stab the inner ear as the person moves.
*If examining an adult, with your free hand, gently pull the ear upwards and back to get full view of the ear canal and in children, gently pull the ear downward and back.
*Angle the otoscope towards their nose for the best view.

This is the perfect product for at home ear exams, especially for kids with frequent ear infections. There have been times I've thought my daughter had an ear infection after a cold and using this, I was able to see that she didn't. Two times I've found that her ear was red inside and looked infected and when I took her in, the Dr. confirmed my findings. For the $45 price tag, this has saved me well more than this amount in potentially wasted co-pays so it's well worth it and very effective. Highly recommended!

This otoscope is fantastic! I was a little dubious about buying this as the cheap otoscope I already have for home use isn't very good. I work as a nurse practitioner in a busy walk in centre. I see ear problems every day and bought this based on the reviews and the fact that the lens is glass as I got fed up with playing hunt the otoscope when I needed one.
It has exceeded expectations. The light is lovely and bright and the glass lens gives a sharp, clear view of the ear canal and ear drum. Previously, I've owned two Heine otoscope/ophthalmoscope sets and a Keeler Vista otoscope/ophthalmoscope set. I liked the Heine sets, but they eventually needed replacing after constant use.
