- Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2014Hopefully this review of the Acc U Rate CMS 50DL (new version) and the Contec CMS 50DL (old version) helps you all out there in making an informed decision on pulse oximeters.
1. Describe your first impression when you received both pulse oximeters.
~ When I received them, I thought they were both very sturdy, simple, and very easy to use.
2. Describe the packaging. Was one pulse oximeter better packaged than the other? Do you happen to prefer one box over another?
~ Both old and upgraded versions were very securely packaged and placed in contoured foam in a small tidy box. I received both well before their estimated delivery dates.
3. Describe the accessories. Are any of them better than the other?
~ Both came with a soft form fitting silicon sleeve, lanyard, and 2xAAA batteries however, though I understand the need to keep your equipment clean, I didn't like the sleeves because they pick up and hold on to dust, dirt, and grit no matter where you have it. Even on the lanyard on top of my scrubs or in my pocket the sleeves would act as a lint roller and as soon as you pick it up or pull it out of your pocket it you would be cleaning off the sleeve more than the actual oximeter. I personally don't use the sleeve just the lanyard. I do have to admit I enjoy the older models' lanyard a little better because it came with a clip that allows me to easily take it off the lanyard especially if you're wearing more than one(lanyard) without having to untangle them (the new model doesn't detach).
4. Was there any difference in the manual? Was one better written than the other?
~ The manuals for the most part were identical but explained exactly how to use and care for the equipment.
5. Which pulse oximeter is easier to use? Could you read the SpO2 and PR easily? Do you have to flip the pulse oximeter to read the measurement?
~ Like I said before, both are sturdy, well made, and very simple to use. Both screens are clear and concise but, I prefer the older model to the newer one for the simple fact that I use mine as a quick read in a nursing home, and it doesn't help me much when the numbers are facing away from me and toward the resident. I have to ask them to twist their wrists or turn their arm, which is not as easy for people with arthritis or other muscular diseases preventing them to have full range of motion. The Acc U Rate model is great for people that are checking themselves at home for personal use but for the professional that doesn't need a recorded measurement just a quick spot check; I would recommend the older Contec model. Another thing I don't like about both is that neither `holds' the reading for more than a second when you take it off it just turns off. The auto shut off feature is something that I do like but it kicks on (off) way too fast especially when you can't get a reading on one finger and have to move to another, you think it's taking the measurement but it's already turned off. Not a big deal really, I just got into the habit of hitting the power button every time I changed fingers.
6. Which pulse oximeter is more accurate?
~ Both oximeters were ±2 points in both pulse and O2 saturation compared to the facility meters.
7. Which one is more comfortable on your finger during measurement?
~ In terms of comfort both were exactly alike in this aspect. They fit well and didn't pinch or slip off, though it does take a few seconds for the meters to give their readings.
8. Was the spring too tight or too loose for your finger?
~ See previous answer.
9. Which one is of better quality in your opinion?
~ Both are sturdy, well made, and very simple to use.
10. Is the price difference justifiable? For example, the Contec version is selling for $19.48. Is the additional cost justified?
~ Both do exactly the same thing they come with similar accessories and packaging but I don't see the justification of the price difference unless you as the merchant are trying to bring in sales.
11. Which one would you prefer to buy?
~ As I said before I prefer the older model simply because of the screen positioning.
Thank you for reading my review if you made it this far, I was just trying to hit all points as best I could. I've had both meters working side by side for about 2 months and they are great for spot checks. They are easy to clean and maintain. And I still haven't had to change the batteries yet. I don't know what I would do without them. They are so dependable and they save me so much time especially when I can't waste a second when a resident is in distress. Believe it or not but they've helped save several of my residents when it mattered most. Simply the best money I've invested in my career. Cheers!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2025The product was exactly as described. The product
was delivered before schedule.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 26, 2013This product is very easy to use. You slip it over your finger, tap the white on button and a small amount of light is emitted on top of your finger. This allows the meter to measure the amount of oxygen in your blood and your pulse. The mechanism of how this unit works in the same as a professional meter. The main difference I can find is that you cannot keep a recording of your blood oxygen or pulse. If you do not need an automatic recording, this is an excellent meter.
The Pros
1. It is very lightweight.
2. It is small enough to carry from place to place. It is a little larger than a string cheese stick folded over (see photo).
3. The on button is small but the white color against the blue background makes it easy to see. It is also raised so that any pressure in the general area will turn it on (see photo).
4. The read-out numbers are large, 1/2 inch by 1/2 inch by measure which is about the equivalent of 20 point font (see photo).
5. It is easy to use in low light or at night since the meter shows the results in red light on a black background (see photo).
6. It takes the reading quickly, about 15 to 30 seconds.
7. The colors are good. The top and bottom are dark blue (darker than the Amazon picture) and the sides are white. When I want to be able to see it easily I turn it on its side so that the white shows. If I want to be more discrete, I turn it so the blue shows.
8. It runs a long time before the batteries need to be changed.
9. I made a major whoops in the kitchen and bounced it off of a granite counter top and then onto a wood floor. The spring gave way a bit but I was able to put it back together. Even though I had to put it back together I was surprised that I had not broken it.
Cons--these are not significant but I believe worth knowing about.
1. If you are reading the numbers on someone else, they are right side up. If you are reading them for yourself you have to learn to read upside down or turn your finger toward yourself like you would to examine your fingernail. Most of the time I can read the numbers upside down but sometimes I get confused so I just turn my finger toward me. You cannot take it off and then read the numbers since it turns off immediately.
2. The battery cover is pretty hard to get off. The location is good but on mine the ridges that you push to move the cover are not very deep. It takes a good amount of pressure to get it open. If your hands are like mine and not as strong as they used to be, you might want to have someone change the battery for you.
3. Sometimes you have to give it an extra 15 to 30 seconds to stabilize the reading.
I would recommend this meter to anyone. I think that it would be easy to use even with coordination or finger dexterity challenges. If your dexterity is not strong, I think you could use it fine but might want to have someone change the battery for you. I have not specifically tested the meter against a professional one but I do know that the readings it gives me are consistent with what I expect from past experience using a professional meter. Of course, every person is different and a health professional can help you determine what is right for you.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2025I bought 2 of these, 2 different brands. I like this one it works pretty good, just a bit loose on finger, most fit snugger. Would get 5 stars if it fit bit snugger, but that doesn't seem to make any difference with how it works

5.0 out of 5 stars Works well
Bought after checking reviews of this model online (from medical personnel). So far, seems to be accurate and working well. Purchased to potentially check effectiveness of oxygen administration in diving emergencies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Precio correcto, producto adecuado

4.0 out of 5 stars COMODO STRUMENTO DI AUTOVALUTAZIONE
