What your cholesterol ratio means
Your cholesterol ratio compares your total cholesterol to your HDL (good) cholesterol. Enter your numbers above and the calculator works out the ratio, which doctors use as one quick indicator of heart-disease risk.
How to read the result
As a general guide, a total-cholesterol-to-HDL ratio below about 5 is desirable and below 3.5 is considered ideal โ lower is better. Because a higher HDL improves the ratio, two people with the same total cholesterol can have very different results.
What it does not replace
This ratio is one piece of the picture. Your doctor also considers your LDL and triglyceride levels, blood pressure, blood sugar, family history and lifestyle before deciding whether any action is needed. Use this result to understand your own numbers, not to diagnose or rule out a problem โ always discuss your full lipid panel with a healthcare professional.
Frequently asked questions
Is a lower ratio always better? Generally yes, but your doctor interprets it alongside your other results.
How can I improve it? Regular activity, a diet lower in saturated fat, not smoking and, where needed, medication โ all guided by your doctor.
