Alison Mahoney, who was suffering from a rare disorder called lymphedema completed a triathlon. This is the skin condition where both of your arms, legs or at least one of them gets swollen.
Till date, there is no cure for the condition. And even Alison was using compression technique for the same. Here her entire swollen leg was wrapped.
This diagnosis and treatment took a toll on her confidence. She became too conscious and uncomfortable about her own appearance. Her confidence was decreasing day by day. she tried to hide her legs under her compression wraps but one day she got frustrated with all this. This gave her lots of confidence.
She was suggested daily exercises as part of her treatment. And she started to gain interest in them. She shared “Fitness and working out has helped build my confidence,”
“I love how I feel after I work out. Basically, I think, ‘OK, so you have something wrong, but it’s not like you can’t move.’ Plus, exercise helps move lymphatic fluid and keeps me healthy, so that is a win-win,”
Since then she entered into the world of bodybuilding and then stepped into Marathon. “Doing the bodybuilding competition really helped me out of my shell and got me to really open up and hold my head high regardless of my disease.
The bodybuilding community was also very supportive and encouraging. The day of the competition everyone was so kind. I never felt judged or looked down on for having lymphedema.”
She has run two half marathons, one of which is sprint triathlon and the other is olympic disease triathlon.
She stays active ny trying new workouts and lifting weighs.
Now, at the age of 32, she is the diva of body positivity. “Everyone has something wrong with them. Get help, learn to manage it, and, then, get on with your life.”
